A few blocks to the north is Chestnut Street which boasts an incredible variety of high-quality restaurants as well as some fine examples of the art-deco architecture that characterizes the area. Continuing north, you'll reach Marina Boulevard where you can catch a remarkable view of the Golden Gate Bridge, which is only 1.5 miles away.

The Marina District is also home to the Marina Green, the Fort Mason Center, the Presidio, the Palace of Fine Arts, the Exploratorium and Crissy Field.

marinaMarina Green, a stretch of green grass running along the edge of the Bay, is a favorite place for jogging, strolling, picnicking, and kite flying.

To the east, Fort Mason Center, located at Marina Boulevard & Buchanan, was established by Spanish soldiers in 1797. Former military warehouses and piers now house museums and art and cultural groups. Reach the 24-hour information line at 415-979-3010.

The Presidio, a formerly active military base recently established as a public park, is a 1,480-acre scenic preserve with miles of hiking trails and bike routes, plus beaches and picnic sites.

The Presidio Museum focuses on the role of the military in the history and development of San Francisco from 1776 to present.
